Lake Burton was built in the early 1900s, and like Lake Rabun, Lake Seed, and three other lakes, it was built to provide hydroelectric power to Atlanta. Lake Burton is the largest lake in the county, with over sixty miles of shoreline. The town of Burton was vacated to create the lake. The Lake Burton Civic Association was formed in the late 1960s and provides homeowners with resources and information on community problems and resolutions and organizes social events. Beyond Lake Burton is the Persimmon Community, which is a secluded and beautiful enclave on the Tallulah River. The trout fishing and camping here is some of the best in the county.
