Lakemont is the “jumping off place” for Lake Rabun. Lakemont now features art galleries, wellness center, gourmet grocery store, and several charming restaurants. A drive through the “downtown” area of Lakemont won’t take long, but the buildings which now house these valuable small businesses are rich in history. The old Alley’s grocery building has been a landmark for many years, and generations of locals and part time residents have fond memories of stopping in for an icy-cold Coke and a chunk of hoop cheese from the shiny red wax-encased round on the counter next to the antique cash register. The buildings are lovingly restored to their former glory in the days when the train brought passengers and goods to the area, and definitely worth a stop.
